Shekhar Saxena, MD is Co-ordinator of the Team Mental Health: Evidence and Research at
World Health Organization, Geneva. He is a psychiatrist by training with about 25 years of experience in research and programme management in the areas of mental health policy, service delivery and information systems, mostly in low and middle income countries. He is responsible for the WHO's project Atlas on mental health resources and for WHO Assessment Instrument for Mental Health Systems (WHO-AIMS). He has more than 180 publications including several edited books.

Contents

This session will begin with discussing the need for assessing and mapping mental health resources in all countries over a period of time.It will describe the methods used and the salient results from WHO's project Atlas implemented in all 192 countries.The session will then introduce the newly developed WHO Assessment Instrument for Mental Health Systems (WHO-AIMS) and present initial results from 35 low and middle income countries. Use of Atlas and WHO-AIMS data in country level planning and service development will be discussed.At the end of the session, the participants should have gained knowledge on the importance of mapping mental health resources within countries and should have learnt ways to do this and to use these data in country level planning.
